Study Design
Study Design Background
Study of the causal role of the gut microbiota on cognitive development and cardiometabolic health. Germ-free mice were transplanted by oral gavage with fecal material obtained from 5 year old children, with gender coherence between donor and recipients. Mice body growth, food intake and cognitive function ware monitored for 5 months after fecal material transplantation (FMT). Then, total body positron emission tomography (microPET) coupled with FDG, and computed tomography (microCT) scans were run to measure glucose metabolism and radiodensity in several organs, with focus on brain, adipose tissues, myocardium, liver, gut. Ultrasound was also applied to measure cardiac morphological and functional parameters, and to assess hepatic lipid content.
